EARTH PAYMENTS
The modern world talks about regeneration in two dimensions. The Ikʉ of the Sierra Nevada live it in six. To them, regeneration is nature in constant conversation with itself; information moving between the mountain, river, sea, and us.
Codes of information are held inside stones and shells, which become food for the territory as they break and fall down toward the sea.
This is how the world stays in balance.
PAGOS DE LA TIERRA
El mundo moderno habla de la regeneración en dos dimensiones. Los Ikʉ de la Sierra Nevada la viven en seis. Para ellos, la regeneración es la naturaleza en constante diálogo consigo misma; información que fluye entre la montaña, el río, el mar y nosotros.
En las piedras y las conchas residen códigos de información que, al fragmentarse y descender hacia el mar, se convierten en alimento para el territorio.
Así es como el mundo mantiene su equilibrio.
Earth Payments is a window into a week-long pilgrimage of the Ikʉ, who walk to the places where the river meets the sea.
At very particular times, in very particular places, they gather the living information and return it to the territory as food - as payment to the Earth. Since time before time, this has been their ancestral technology: before taking from the land, they feed it.
You may need to watch this more than once, not only to follow Ruperto's words, but to absorb the frequency of his medicine. It moves in circles, the way nature speaks, and the modern ear has to slow down to hear it.
Earth Payments es una ventana a una peregrinación de una semana realizada por el pueblo Ikʉ, quienes caminan hasta los lugares donde el río se encuentra con el mar.
En momentos y lugares muy específicos, ellos recogen la información viva y la devuelven al territorio como alimento: como un pago a la Tierra. Desde tiempos inmemoriales, esta ha sido su tecnología ancestral: antes de tomar algo de la tierra, la alimentan.
Es posible que necesites ver esto más de una vez, no solo para seguir las palabras de Ruperto, sino para absorber la frecuencia de su medicina. Esta se mueve en círculos, tal como habla la naturaleza, y el oído moderno debe desacelerar para poder escucharla.

This is regeneration as the Ikʉ live it: an unbroken exchange of information between every element of the living world. And when Ruperto says we are 'added there', he means we are not watching nature from the outside, but are one of its voices, part of the conversation. To feed the earth is simply to take our place in it again.
The Ikʉ never forgot this. They are still listening, and still feeding the earth on behalf of us all.

Así viven la regeneración los Ikʉ: un intercambio ininterrumpido de información entre cada elemento del mundo vivo. Y cuando Ruperto dice que nos hemos "incorporado a ella", quiere decir que no observamos la naturaleza desde afuera, sino que somos una de sus voces, parte de la conversación. Alimentar la tierra es, sencillamente, volver a ocupar nuestro lugar en ella.
Los Ikʉ nunca lo olvidaron. Siguen escuchando, y siguen alimentando la tierra en nombre de todos nosotros.
THE GREATER WORK
The film was never the whole purpose, it was the vehicle to which the Ikʉ where able to conduct pagamentos.
With people inhabiting and privatizing the coast, this limits coastal access. To descend the mountain and spend days searching for materials now requires the involvement of money - like staying in a hotel and buying food. The making of Earth Payments funded the pagamentos it follows. Across the week, the Ikʉ gathered what the territory offered and carried it home.
We can tell you how many pagamentos were made, and how many bags of sacred material came home. We cannot tell you what that means to a people whose work is to hold the equilibrium of the world. That was never ours to measure and never ours to give. The film only made room for the Ikʉ to do what they have always done.

LA GRAN LABOR
La película nunca fue el objetivo principal; fue el vehículo que permitió a los Ikʉ realizar los pagamentos.
La ocupación y privatización de la costa limita el acceso a ella. Ascender a la montaña y pasar días recolectando materiales ahora implica gastos monetarios, como alojarse en un hotel y comprar alimentos. La realización de *Earth Payments* financió los *pagamentos* que se muestran en ella. A lo largo de la semana, los Ikʉ recolectaban lo que el territorio ofrecía y lo llevaban consigo de regreso.
Podemos decirles cuántos *pagamentos* se realizaron y cuántas bolsas de material sagrado se trajeron de vuelta. No podemos decirles qué significa eso para un pueblo cuya labor es mantener el equilibrio del mundo. Eso nunca nos correspondió medirlo ni transmitirlo. La película simplemente abrió un espacio para que los Ikʉ hicieran lo que siempre han hecho.
